Walking into therapy for the first time is a brave thing. Here's what to expect so it feels less mysterious.

Before the session You'll fill out brief paperwork (history, what brings you in, emergency contact). It usually takes 10 minutes.

The first 50 minutes Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what you're hoping for, and a bit about your history. There's no right answer — and you don't have to come in with a tidy explanation. Many people start with "I'm not even sure where to begin," and that's a perfectly fine place to begin.

What you'll leave with A sense of fit (does this person feel right?), a draft of what you'd like to work on, and usually one small thing to try before the next session.

A note on fit If after one or two sessions it doesn't feel right, tell us. Therapy works largely because of the relationship, and we'd rather find you the right match than keep going through inertia.
